HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) is a global ocean model. The model uses isopycnal in the open, stratified ocean and reverts to terrain following coordinates in shallow water and to z-level coordinates in the mixed layer and/or well-mixed sea to optimize the simulation results of coastal and open-ocean circulation system. The computational of HYCOM is carried out on the Mercator grid between 47°N and 78°S (1/12 ° equatorial resolution) and the region north of 47°N is use the bipolar patch. The horizontal dimension of HYCOM is 4500×3298 grid points with 32 vertical layers. HYCOM employs the Navy Coupled Ocean Data Assimilation (NCODA) system (Cummings, 2005) to assimilate the model data. NCODA uses the model forecast as the first guess in Multi-variable Optimal Interpolation (MVOI) and then assimilates with satellite and in-situ SST, temperature and salinity profiles from AGRO floats, moored buoys and XBTs as well as with available satellite altimeter observations. Downward projection of surface information is obtained from Modular Ocean Data Assimilation System (MODAS) synthetics (Fox et al., 2002). The surface forcing of HYCOM is derived from the Navy Operational Global Atmospheric Prediction System (NOGAPS) and consists of heat flux, precipitation, wind speed and wind stress. Bathymetry of HYCOM is derived from the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), Digital Bathymetric Data Base (DBDB2).
